Best upcoming concerts at the OVO Hydro, Glasgow's galactic amphitheatre
29 October 2026
In 2008, Glasgow was named UNESCO City of Music for its legendary music scene. The organization deemed that music "is the city's beating heart" and they got that right. Glasgow offers every option from underground gigs to big international festivals, and the mood ranges from punk to Celtic music and almost everything in between.
Among those options, The OVO Hydro is hard to miss. The venue has become a major entertainment destination in Europe, with a space-like design that really makes you wonder about its history and intention.
In the middle of a very busy season, I wanted to write about what makes it special and the best opportunities to catch a show in the last months of 2026.
Hard facts about the OVO Hydro
- OVO Hydro is the largest entertainment venue in Scotland and it hosts more than a million visitors each year.
- It has a maximum capacity of 14,300, both seated and standing in the performance bowl.
- The OVO Hydro is located inside a major event complex, the Scottish Event Campus (SEC), and it neighbours the SEC Armadillo, another local landmark.
- The place is consistently ranked by Pollstar in the top 10 arenas worldwide, sharing that ranking with renowned venues like Madison Square Garden in New York and The O2 in London.
- The site opened in September 2013 with a concert by Sir Rod Stewart. OVO's website says the opening event was "something truly special" as the venue "officially opened to the best fans in the world".
The soul of an ancient amphitheatre
The architects behind the OVO Hydro are London-based Foster + Partners, who are known internationally for works like Hong Kong International Airport, the City Hall in London, the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, as well as the Bilbao Metro.
Foster + Partners got inspired by ancient Greek and Roman amphitheatres to build the elliptical shape of the OVO Hydro, but the choice goes beyond the aesthetic. For the audience, this design also means the perfect balance of viewing angle and distance from the stage.
By translating some of the principles in classic amphitheatre architecture, the OVO Hydro seeks to offer better views for spectators farther from the stage. The audience is arranged in a curved fashion, instead of a classic rectangular hall.
According to the architects' website, the building's form is generated from the inside-out by the seating, which wraps around the stage and rises toward the front, "drawing the audience closer to the excitement of the performance".
The look of a glowing spaceship
Another feature I love about the OVO Hydro is that it literally "glows" at night. The facade was designed with pneumatic translucent panels and a special film. Patterns and images can be projected onto the panels, changing the personality of the place with each event and allowing room for personalization and creativity.
Fun fact: this special film in the facade was originally developed for the space industry. No wonder the OVO Hydro looks like it comes from outer space, glowing in the Scottish night like a cosmic body.
The technology of the air-filled panels also allows for natural light to illuminate the inner foyers during the day, and their transparency may reveal glimpses of some of the action inside, making the building interactive with its surroundings.
What's it like to enjoy a concert at the OVO Hydro?
The OVO Hydro offers a big arena experience in a relatively compact venue, and the flexibility of its shape allows it to host very different events from concerts to sports.
While the curved bowl offers an elevated view, some concert reviews suggest that the position matters more than the distance to the stage. A concertgoer on Reddit recommended the central sections over seats that are either too low and close, or too high and far.
It also seems that the large-scale productions work best for musical performances, as the visual and lighting effects in this architectural design can create an impressive, almost immersive spectacle.
