Milan vs Venezia: Milan Raises the Stakes

Seen as the strongest football team on the planet in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and all but owners of Serie A through the 1950s and 1990s, AC Milan have managed just one league title in the past 15 years.

Their last Scudetto came in 2021-22, and more than four years on, the Rossoneri are still waiting for their 20th. Last season started superbly. Massimiliano Allegri's men finished Matchday 14 top of the pile and were still only three points behind leaders Inter after 20 games.

Then came the final day. Needing just a point at home to Cagliari, and 1-0 up early on, Milan lost 2-1. That dropped them out of the top four, handed their Champions League ticket to Como and cost the Italian coach his job. It was also the signal for a major shake-up.

Rúben Amorim, who made his name with his success at Sporting Lisbon and then fell short of expectations at Manchester United, was the man chosen to lead the Rossoneri through that change.

Milan were long known as the club of disadvantaged groups such as the working class and immigrants, of blue-collar workers and of the political left. Venezia Want to Make It Stick This Time

Promoted to Serie A three times and relegated to Serie B twice in the past six years, Venezia have well and truly become a yo-yo club. On each of their last two trips to the top flight, they went straight back down. This time, the Venetians want to stay up.

Giovanni Stroppa's side hosted Lecce in their opening game and were clearly the better team in the first half, especially in the opening half hour. Venezia had a goal ruled out for handball in the 15th minute.

They then fell behind just 19 seconds into the second half. Stroppa's men went close to an equaliser in the 72nd minute and thought they had found it three minutes later, only for that goal to be chalked off for offside too.

Five minutes after that, Tiago Gabriel doubled Lecce's lead and sent the match past the point of no return. Good football, but no points from the opening weekend.

The Veneto side will have to work extremely hard for a surprise point at San Siro.
