Despite still being counted among the Premier League's traditional "Big Six", Tottenham Hotspur have consistently failed to live up to that billing in recent seasons. After coming dangerously close to dropping into the Championship last season, Spurs have responded by spending heavily this summer in an attempt to make sure it does not happen again and to re-establish themselves as a major force.

Only time will tell how much of that investment turns into success.

Tottenham broke their club transfer record twice in quick succession this summer. The first move raised plenty of eyebrows, with Spurs paying £85 million for 21-year-old midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

Roberto De Zerbi arrived with seven matches remaining last season and managed to keep Tottenham in the Premier League, finishing two points above West Ham United. Just days after the Fernandes deal, Spurs backed De Zerbi with another huge midfield investment, signing Sandro Tonali for £100 million.

Yet after spending more than £200 million in the transfer market, De Zerbi's side still suffered one of the heaviest defeats of the opening weekend, losing 3-0 away to Brentford. Tottenham's defensive mistakes were impossible to ignore.

So can things finally begin to improve when Spurs play their first Premier League home game of the season?

Victory Slipped Away at the Last

Newcastle United have been among the Premier League's biggest sellers this summer. Tonali moved to Tottenham, Bruno Guimarães joined Arsenal and Anthony Gordon signed for Barcelona, bringing Newcastle around £250 million in transfer income from those three deals alone.

The club then spent roughly 70 per cent of that money on a major squad overhaul. Even so, Newcastle came agonisingly close to taking all three points at home against one of the league's title favourites, Liverpool.

Newcastle went ahead twice but somehow saw victory slip away by a matter of seconds. With five minutes of stoppage time indicated, a Liverpool attack beginning from midfield at 95:05 eventually resulted in a penalty and the equaliser that left Newcastle having to settle for a point.

Against Liverpool, Newcastle found both of their goals through counter-attacks, one early in the match and another early in the second half. Matthias Jaissle will now be calculating how his side can exploit similar spaces against Tottenham.

Still only 38, the German coach has already won six trophies, including two Austrian Bundesliga titles and two AFC Champions League Elite crowns. He now heads to north London looking for his first Premier League victory.
