A European Adventure After 27 Years

Turkish clubs have been showing one of the weakest performances in European competitions in recent years. Last season, we started the group stage with four teams—our big three plus Başakşehir—but this season only three Turkish clubs remain. Two of the “big four” of our league unfortunately failed to qualify for the league stage. Beşiktaş was eliminated in both the Europa League and the Conference League qualifiers, while Trabzonspor did not even reach the qualifying rounds. In the play-off stage, Fenerbahçe, Samsunspor, Beşiktaş, and Başakşehir all failed against their opponents. Apart from Galatasaray, who qualified directly for the Champions League, the only Turkish teams continuing their European journey in September were Fenerbahçe and Samsunspor. Beginning their European adventure from the Europa League play-off round, Samsunspor performed well against Panathinaikos but, after elimination, they will now play in the Conference League. Unlike the Champions League and Europa League, which both feature 8 regular-season matches, the Conference League consists of 6 games. Other than the match count, the format is the same: 36 teams are ranked according to points and goal difference after six games. The top 8 teams advance directly to the Round of 16, while those ranked 9–24 play play-offs. From Samsunspor, we expect at the very least a place in the top 24, ideally among the top 8. Last season, Başakşehir failed to make the top 24 in the Conference League, and this season they couldn’t reach the league stage after being eliminated by Romanian side Cracovia. Our representative begins their campaign in a tough away game in Warsaw. If you don’t want to leave them alone, Legia Warsaw – Samsunspor tickets are waiting for you at Seatpin.

A European Adventure After 27 Years

Samsunspor, one of the most influential Turkish clubs of the late 1980s, suffered a tragic accident in January 1989 and was relegated one season later. After a period of moving between divisions, they re-established themselves in the top tier, staying in the Süper Lig until the mid-2000s. After the 2005–06 season, however, they managed to play in the Süper Lig only once in 12 years. Following administrative struggles and relegation to the 2nd League in the 2017–18 season, they began their comeback under Yüksel Yıldırım. With the 2019–20 championship, they returned to the 1st League, and in 2022–23 they won promotion back to the Süper Lig after 12 years. Last season, they finished 3rd in the Süper Lig, earning the right to compete in European competitions after 27 years. Having played in the top flight only once in 18 seasons, Samsunspor equaled their best-ever league performance in just their second year after returning. The club previously competed in the Intertoto Cup in 1997 and 1998, recording strong results but losing to German clubs and missing out on the UEFA Cup. Their greatest European achievement remains the 1998 Intertoto Cup quarterfinals, where they beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in both legs to reach the semifinals. Now, every match in the Conference League will mark another historic step for Samsunspor. If you want to witness this journey live, Legia Warsaw – Samsunspor tickets are now on sale at Seatpin.
