About this event

Haaland got off to a good start

Group I of the World Cup stands out as a tough group featuring three strong teams, including the runner-up from the last World Cup. Norway, facing Iraq—which appeared to be the group’s weakest team on paper—kicked off its return to the tournament after a 28-year absence with a high-scoring victory. Erling Haaland, 25, who ranks among the world’s best center forwards, scored his first World Cup goal in the 29th minute of his debut match. Although Iraq’s goal by Aymen Husein in the 39th minute—scored by slipping through Norway’s tall defense—and their play in the final quarter of an hour of the first half caused Stale Solbaken some concern, the Vikings managed to head into the locker room with the lead thanks to Haaland’s pressure on the goalkeeper late in the first half. The European side, which played better in the second half, scored two more goals to kick off the tournament with a 4-1 victory and finished the first week at the top of the group. Solbaken’s players, who will face increasingly tough opponents in the group’s final two matches, will have the chance to better test their strength against Senegal, who lost their opening match. They played very well in the first half against France

Senegal, which played a tough opening match against the World Cup’s most recent runner-up, had also faced France—the defending champion—in its first match at the 2002 World Cup. After winning that opener 1-0, Senegal advanced from the group stage and went on to have a strong tournament. The African representative, which also eliminated Sweden in the Round of 16, was knocked out by Turkey in the quarterfinals after being unable to stop İlhan Mansız’s golden goal. The Teranga Lions, looking to start the tournament with another victory over France, put on a very strong performance in the first half. In the 25th minute, had luck been on Nicolas Jackson’s side, the ball—which first hit the post and then Maignan’s back—might have gone into the net instead of out for a corner. Toward the end of the first half, Senegal came close to scoring on a shot by Ismaila Sarr but failed to capitalize on the opportunity to go into halftime with a lead. In the second half, the African team was unable to withstand France’s pressure. Although veteran goalkeeper Mendy kept his net secure in one-on-one situations against Barcola and Mbappé, Mbappé’s masterful strike—assisted by Olise—in the 66th minute broke the deadlock. In the 68th minute, Jackson scored what would have been the equalizer but was ruled offside by a narrow margin, and the goal did not count. In the 82nd minute, Barcola extended the lead to 2 on a pass from Rabiot, but in the 90+5th minute, Pape Thiaw and his players—who never gave up on earning a point until the very end—narrowed the gap to 1 through Mbaye. However, they lost all hope of a point immediately after the kickoff following the goal, when Mbappe scored from outside the penalty area. In the 90+10th minute, Maignan denied Senegal a second goal, and the Africans left the match—which they had played well—without any points. If you, like us, are curious to see what the Lions—who still have a chance to advance from the group stage thanks to their quality and determined play in their last two matches—will do against a rival of their own caliber, Norway vs. Senegal match tickets are waiting for you on seatpin.
