Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest: Will the Gamble Pay Off?

Liverpool comfortably finished ahead of Arsenal and Manchester City to win the title in 2024-25, but the Arne Slot era came to an end after last season proved worse than expected.

Liverpool appear to be placing their faith in Iraola's ability to make a good meal from limited ingredients. Until now, he has done his cooking at Bournemouth and Rayo Vallecano, the equivalent of neighbourhood restaurants where an average of around 1.5 points per game would hardly be a problem and might even be welcomed.

Liverpool, however, are a Michelin-starred restaurant. What was enough at his previous clubs will most likely not be enough for Iraola to establish himself at Anfield for the long term.

Glasner Appointment Turns Heads

Nottingham Forest spent last season combining a relegation battle with a run in the Europa League. Under Vítor Pereira, Forest finished above West Ham and Tottenham to secure their Premier League status, while their European campaign ended in the semi-finals against eventual winners Aston Villa.

That outcome had been expected to keep the Portuguese coach in his job. Instead, Forest made an unexpected move by appointing Oliver Glasner on a substantial annual salary. The Austrian had also been linked with clubs in Turkey and Germany.

After winning the Europa League with Frankfurt, Glasner moved to the Premier League. He went on to win the FA Cup, Community Shield and, most recently, the Conference League with Crystal Palace, making him one of the most sought-after coaches on the market.

His decision to join Nottingham Forest was therefore particularly surprising.

Glasner's first task will be to reduce an overcrowded squad to a more manageable size. After that, the aim is to make more efficient use of the quality already available and take Forest to another level.

The objective this season is to establish a foundation with the current group. The partnership is expected to last at least three seasons, with the longer-term project built on that base.

That approach also explains Forest's restraint in the transfer market. Elliot Anderson, signed from Newcastle for £35 million two seasons ago, was sold to Manchester City for £116 million. Despite that windfall, Forest spent only around a quarter of the fee on centre-back Ousmane Diomande, while Xaver Schlager arrived on a free transfer.

Both players were chosen with Glasner's physically demanding and athletic style in mind, although there is talk that they will need a few more weeks before they are ready for Premier League football.

It will be fascinating to see what impact Glasner can have on Forest. For now, the only evidence comes from their opening league match, when they lost 1-0 at home to Leeds United and generated just 0.66 expected goals.

Their opening-week performance does not look sufficient to take points from Anfield. Even so, a team with Glasner on the touchline can never be taken lightly.

Forest will travel to Liverpool hoping to respond to that unexpected opening defeat with a surprise away victory.
